6 Tips for Taking Notes during Lecture

One of the greatest skills we students need is the skill of notes taking. Most of the students think that taking
notes is not necessary, as long as one has a bright mind. However, this supposition can be questioned on various footings. One may be right for that exact moment. But, when the exams are near, and you feel the need to cram some important points, that’s the time you’d wish you’d made notes of your own.
In my educational career I have been through a lot of ups and downs. But, I give credit, for my all ups, to my habit of taking notes. In order to make you believe in the importance of this skill I must relate here the appreciatory response I had been receiving from my academic fellows. Not only my classmates but also my teachers used to consult my notes when they needed.
Here I am writing a list of following important tips which will help you in taking notes during your lecture, presentations, textbooks etc.

 1: Listening Attentively

Remember, one of the vital things during your sessions is listening to each and every word carefully. At that moment, you may think, "I know what the teacher is saying, so it's not necessary to listen all of it". The more you listen carefully, the more you will be able to absorb all of it.

2: Important Gadgets

Here, by gadgets I mean you must have a pen/pencil and neat paper every moment during your class sessions. The pen or pencil busy in writing during any kind of lecture will turn out to be your savior in your darkest hour.

3: Date and Topic

At the top of your page write date and topic and underline it if necessary. I have first-hand experience of how important it is to properly date your notes. Once, I was revising some lectures. I came across a topic which I had noted down, but there was no date written on the page. I tried to recall it but of no use. The anxiety overtook me, and thus I left that topic without preparing it. A benefiting notes leaflet must have date and topic right at the top of your page.

4: Taking notes in bullet points

As for me, I always used to take notes in bullet points. There are many methods of taking notes: bullet points, outlining method and summary method. The latter has been somehow difficult for me; I was never good at it. In summary method you can write short paragraph under each heading. However, the bullet point method will help you in being specific and to the point. So, at the end of the day you will have less material but a profiting material.

5: Symbols and abbreviations

You do know what I am saying. Yes! Making extraordinary notes is not something otherworldly. Using symbols and abbreviations will not only save your time but they will be saved in your memory for a longer period.

6: Revision: The Most Important Part

Revising your notes within twenty-four hours is as important as taking notes. If you note down a lecture perfectly, but do not read it when you are back at home, then it’s of almost no use. In my own experience, I have benefited more from the lectures that I repeated back at home than those which I didn’t repeat within twenty-four hours.

In the end, I invite you to make recommendations for me in order to come up with more topics which will help students. Any suggestion will be of immense gratitude.
